Varsity and Junior Varsity Volleyball Teams Start Season Strong
A loud and boisterous fieldhouse saw the Wayland Academy varsity volleyball team cruise to a dominant victory over Madison Country Day School in straight sets. Wayland controlled the match from (almost) start to finish.
The Big Red overcame a slow start in the first set and finished it with dominant serving by Lizzy Tallman [25-19]. The girls controlled the second set with outstanding work from Alicia Lechon Cabello and Tia Thomas [25-12]. And though Country Day came out with more energy in the third set, the Wayland girls had little trouble putting the match away [25-16].
Alicia led the team with 10 kills, while Tia contributed 5 assists, 5 digs, and 5 aces. The Big Red also received strong performances from Lizzy, Chloe Haipek, Milly Barudin, Ellie Aplin, Hen Belloc Lowndes, and Aryanna Oestreicher. It was an awesome performance to start off the year.
Wayland’s JV Red team also opened the season with a solid victory over Madison Country Day! Strong serving streaks from freshmen Carmen Kehrmeyer, Alanna Schuett, Erin Tallman; junior Evelynn Krenz and senior Alexis Spears, combined with efficient team passing contributed to our domination in all 3 sets. We held the opponents to single digits and played all legally and properly equipped, healthy players. The final scores were 25-6, 25-9, 25-7.
Our team captains, Aria Petty, Emma Vickers, and Alexis Spears guided the new players in staying in the proper rotation, serve-receive and base positions.
