Wayland Fine Arts Provide a Variety of Opportunities for Students to Shine

As the school year draws to a close many Wayland students are receiving recognition for their academic, athletic, and artistic efforts during the year. At the annual POPS Concert, held the evening of Tuesday, May 14, students excelling in Fine Arts - visual, vocal, and instrumental - were celebrated.
Visual Arts
The Trailways Conference Art Show was hosted at Oakfield High School in April. Eleven student pieces made by nine students in upper-level art classes had their work submitted. The conference judges awarded Qianzhen “Li” Li `20 third place for his acrylic painting entitled “The Lamp.” Wayland students Alyssa VerWiebe `21 won third place in photography, while Eddie Marsh `19 secured an honorable mention in that category. See photos of the Wayland students and their entries here.
Wayland Excellence in Art Awards were presented to the following students: Hailey Kowing `22, Shania Luster `21, Alexis Spears `20, Allison Pearce `20 and Sydney Seufzer `19.
Vocal and Instrumental Arts
The Wisconsin State Music Association’s annual Solo and Ensemble competition involves over 100,000 student musicians from across the state. Wayland hosted the conference Solo and Ensemble Festival earlier this spring.
For the competition, students select a piece of music from a list that is divided into three difficulty categories. Students prepare the piece and perform it for a judge at the festival. The judge rates the performance on a scale of 1-5 with 1 being the highest. The Wayland student musicians all received one of the top two ratings.
Students selected to represent Wayland at the State Solo and Ensemble competition held in Oshkosh included: Yicheng “Charles” Lu `19, Stephanie Njeru `19, Jing Jin `20, Noah Padilla `20, Kevin Byrne `21, Hayden Masche ` 21, Max Wierenga `21, and Ellie Aplin `22. Shuhong “Danny” Liu `20 and Molly Davis `22 qualified for state in two events, while Gabbay Madu `19 competed in three events.
At the state level judges have an opportunity to nominate students whose performance was truly exceptional – beyond what is typically expected for this age group. At the end of the competition day, each adjudicator selects the most exceptional performances to receive the Exemplary Performance Award from among those nominated. Gabbay Madu was nominated for Exemplary Performance Awards both for her soprano solo and for her music theater solo. Molly Davis was nominated and received an Exemplary Performance award for her alto solo.
Wayland Four-Year Music Awards were presented to Yicheng “Charles” Lu and Ladin Akcacioglu `19.
Dominykas Stasiulaitus `20 received the Outstanding Achievement in Piano Award, while the Excellence in Piano Performance Award was presented to Yicheng “Charles” Lu.
