Visual Arts

With more than 10 art classes to choose from (not including independent study options)—you can stretch your creative boundaries in classes taught by Wayland's very own resident artist.

Wayland’s visual arts program is designed to give every student an experience that reflects their interests and ambitions. Whether a student is fulfilling graduation requirements or preparing for advanced study in the arts, the curriculum is flexible enough to meet their needs. With more than ten courses across a wide range of media—painting, drawing, ceramics, photography, mixed media, and other specialized areas—students can create a path uniquely their own.

In the studio, students build creative confidence and problem-solving skills that extend far beyond the classroom. Art at Wayland is not just about producing drawings or paintings; students learn to measure, strengthen hand-eye coordination, and become more comfortable navigating challenges as they arise. Thoughtful cycles of observation, reflection, and revision help them grow as thinkers and communicators at every level. Courses beyond the introductory level also offer Honors and Advanced Placement options for those ready to push themselves academically and artistically.

Students at Wayland have genuine agency in how they study art. They can mix and match classes, dive into areas that excite them, or simply bypass those that don’t fit their goals. Independent Art allows students to pursue any feasible interest—such as printmaking, digital art, or fibers—even if it isn’t available as a stand-alone course. Ultimately, Wayland’s art program is a space to experiment, take risks, and try again. Students leave not only with strong artistic skills, but with resilience, perception, and a confident creative voice.
