Wayland's PG year program is designed for students seeking more time, who may also be unsure of their preferred course of study or career path. Our program offers support for the high school graduate who is a little burned out and needs to discover their excitement for learning again. PG students at Wayland will have opportunities for personal exploration, inter-cultural experiences, to learn independency, and try new things before college. 

PG students have the freedom to explore new subjects or to expand their knowledge in a specific discipline because they are not held to specific curriculum requirements that need to be met for graduation. Maybe they are someone who could not fit music or art classes into their schedule during their four years of high school, but they always wanted to learn an instrument, sing in the choir, or experience working on a pottery wheel. Or, they could be a student who took some Spanish or German classes in high school, but would like to further their learning to become a more more fluent speaker. There is also the option to try Advanced Placement (AP) courses that a student may not have been prepared to take during high school.

Our academic team will work with each PG student to ensure that their postgraduate year works for them. 

Student-athletes choose a postgraduate year to further develop their athletic skills and raise their athletic profile. At Wayland, PG student have the opportunity participate in rowing, powerlifting, and custom-designed workouts to improve their athletic skills and abilities. 

Wayland's third pillar is to strengthen the emotional and physical well being of students through participation on athletic teams or in physical education classes, and through policies designed to encourage healthy lifestyles.

At Wayland students explore their talents (even the ones they haven't discovered yet), grow their leadership skills, and find their own way to shine—alongside other students and faculty who are rooting for their success.

As full-time members of the senior class and as boarding or day students, postgraduates are active participants in the Wayland community.  The structured independence of our boarding school community fosters personal growth and maturity, as well as fully prepares students for the rigors of college.

The college counseling program at Wayland provides personal one-on-one attention for each student. Students are guided through their college search and application process every step of the way.

And, college admission officers know that postgraduate students are prepared, mature, and more committed than average first-year college students and look favorably upon students who choose a postgraduate year.
