Wayland Academy Welcomes Two New Trustees: Kim Holland and John Unland `70

Wayland Academy is proud to welcome Karen “Kim” Kimberly Holland and John Unland `70 to its Board of Trustees. Both bring deep professional expertise, a passion for education, and strong ties to the Wayland community.

Karen “Kim” Kimberly Holland

Kim earned her MEd from Marymount University and a BA from Lawrence University. With more than 30 years of experience in education, nonprofit leadership, and community service, she has served as a teacher, administrator, advisor, and board member. She is currently on the President’s Advisory Council at Lawrence and has held leadership roles with the Daughters of the American Revolution and Kappa Kappa Gamma, where she was named Outstanding Advisor in 2025. Kim also leads her own photography business and has long championed student growth and mentorship.

“I’m honored to follow in my father’s (Richard H. Kimberly `54) long-standing commitment to Wayland,” she said. Kim lives outside Washington, D.C., with her husband, T.J., and has two adult children, Jack and Mack.

John Unland `70

John is a global marketing strategist, author, and retired business owner. After graduating from Wayland, he studied at the London School of Economics, earned his BA from Colgate University, and received an MBA from The Wharton School of Business. He began his career in public policy with the White House and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce before founding his own consultancy, The Unland Company.

Through his firm, John provided strategic marketing and communication services to a wide range of clients—from NASA to global brands such as W.L. Gore & Associates (Gore-Tex®), DuPont, and Lockheed Martin. Now retired in Idaho, John is active in nonprofits supporting healthcare and education and is the author of two books, with a third in progress.

“Wayland gave me confidence, resilience, and a foundation for lifelong learning,” John said. “I’m honored to give back to the place that gave so much to me.”
