Passing of Longtime Trustee

Richard "Dick" H. Kimberly `54
April 11, 1935–November 23, 2023

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, it is with heavy hearts and an appreciation of a life well lived that we share that our alumnus, friend, and longtime Trustee, Richard "Dick" H. Kimberly, Class of 1954, passed away unexpectedly on November 23. We will all miss him more than words can express. Dick loved Wayland Academy, and his loyalty and support of the Academy was to ensure that our school would be here for generations to come.

Dick's steadfast support of Wayland Academy will never be forgotten. He contributed his time, talent, and treasure to the Academy for over 60 years. Dick joined the Wayland Academy Board of Trustees in 1963 as the President of the Alumni Board and served as board chair twice (1974–1980 and 2002–2008). He received the Alumni Achievement Award in 2001, and on May 24, 2009, he earned Wayland's highest honor, the Distinguished Service Citation. He was also the recipient of Wayland's Alumni Volunteer Award in 2019. 

In 2005, Wayland's Memorial Chapel was rededicated the Kimberly Chapel in honor of the generous support of Mr. Kimberly. He was the epitome of a man of knowledge and character, and it is fitting that our community meets in the Kimberly Chapel weekly for Assembly and Chapel, as these are opportunities to celebrate and share as a community, building "knowledge and character." 

Dick's legacy will forever live on at Wayland, as he was our rock. He was always there for Wayland as a resource and invested himself in the work being done to educate our students. 

As a community, we will celebrate the life and legacy of Dick Kimberly in the coming months. We will share details when they are available. There will be time to reflect on his impact on Wayland and to remember the person that he was while honoring the legacy that he left behind.
