Wayland Academy Student Represents Costa Rica at 2025 Central American Games

Wayland Academy senior José Fabián Calvo Guevara proudly represented his home country of Costa Rica in the 2025 Central American Games, held October 18-30 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The multi-sport event brought together top athletes from seven Central American nations to compete across 42 sports and 56 events.

Fabián, a member of Wayland’s rowing team, made history as the first Costa Rican ever to compete in rowing at the Central American Games. Having taken up the sport at Wayland just two years ago, he was selected to represent Costa Rica in the men’s singles event—an impressive milestone for both the athlete and his country, which currently has no national rowing infrastructure. While facing challenging heat and competition from seasoned rowers, Fabian embraced the experience as a valuable step in his athletic development. He reflected, “It’s all part of the process. I learned so much about international competition and what it takes to reach the next stage.”

His coach, Seth Ahblorn, praised Fabián’s efforts: “The main point is that he was there, competing for his country as the first Costa Rican rower in the Games. That courage and commitment set the stage for future growth in the sport.”

Fabián’s achievement reflects the perseverance and global spirit that define Wayland Academy students—pushing boundaries, embracing challenges, and making an impact far beyond campus.
