Joseph Lennertz H`86, who has served as Wayland Academy’s Head of School since 2012, recently shared his intent to retire as of June 30, 2020. Lennertz previously discussed his retirement with the school’s Board of Trustees, and made the announcement personally to the school’s faculty, staff, and students on April 18. Alumni, parents, and other constituents were notified by email and mail.
Board of Trustees Chair David C. Larson `71 noted, "I am thankful for how Joe has capably guided Wayland Academy and positioned the school well for the future with numerous improvements in the classroom and curriculum. He is one of the most respected teachers and administrators in Wayland’s long history and will be remembered for his intellectual curiosity that helped him inspire continuous improvement in all aspects of the school."
A search committee comprised of trustees, alumni, parents, and faculty was established and is chaired by former Board of Trustees Chair William T. Luedke IV `70. Will and his colleagues will work with a nationally recognized search firm that specializes in Head of School searches for independent schools hired by the Board of Trustees to recruit and present qualified candidates for interview.
The Academy’s next Head of School will join a vibrant, diverse and high-achieving community that is proud of the school’s exceptional history and prepared to embrace exciting opportunities for the future.
