· First of all, relax. While applying to college is a long process, you shouldn't be stressed about it yet. However, there are things you can do now that will make the process easier later on.
· Most academic disciplines are sequential. When choosing classes, you should think about where you want to be in four years. Work with your guidance counselor to choose courses that will allow you to take honors or AP classes your junior or senior year.
· Explore the many clubs, organizations, and sports available in your community and school. Admission officers like to see continuity and commitment in regards to extracurricular activities. Freshmen year is a good time to experiment and try different activities.
· Develop good study habits. Volunteer answers and opinions in class. Ask questions when you don't understand. Go to your teachers when you need extra help. Focus on writing skills. Learn to budget your time. Avoid procrastination. These are key skills needed to be a good student and to survive college.
· Read above and beyond what is assigned to you in school. Regular readers generally do better on the SAT.
· Have fun. Be open to new experiences. Remember that choices you make now will have long term consequences.
· Summers are a great time to explore your interests through travel, work, internships, volunteer experiences, and camps.
