Wayland Academy offers three levels of courses: Advanced Placement (AP), Honors (H), and College Preparatory. Placement into one of these levels is determined by various criteria, including previous grades, standardized test results and teacher recommendations, as well as parent and student expectations and desires. At the AP level, students enroll only through invitation of the instructor and department.

Wayland offers 15 AP classes: English, Calculus AB and BC, Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, U.S. History, European History, Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, U.S. Government, Spanish, German and Latin. There is no limit to the number of AP courses a student may take, but enrollment is by invitation only. Student in AP classes are required to take the AP exam.

Diploma Requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 19 credits in the following areas to receive a diploma from Wayland Academy.

  • English - 4 credits (1 credit in each of English 1, 2, 3, and 4)
  • Mathematics - 3 credits (1 credit in each of Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry, Logic, and Proofs)
  • Science - 3 credits (1 credit in Biology, 1 credit in Chemistry, and 1 credit in Physics)
  • Social Science/History - 3 credits (1 credit in U. S. History, 1 credit of a non-U.S. History, and 1 additional credit)
  • Modern and Classical Languages - 3 credits (Successful completion of 2 consecutive years of the same language and 1 year of Latin OR 3 consecutive years of Latin)
  • Fine Arts - 1 credit in any combination of Fine Arts courses
  • Athletics/AAP/PE - 4 years participation

Students are required to carry a minimum of five academic courses each semester, which must be selected from the following departments: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies/History and Foreign Language. Students may take Fine Arts courses as one of the five courses or they can take a Fine Arts course in addition to the minimum load. Students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher will be allowed to enroll in 3/4 credit of Fine Arts per semester. Other students may enroll in a maximum of 1/2 credit of Fine Arts per semester.

All members of the senior class are required to successfully complete all of their academic courses during the senior year in order to receive a diploma from Wayland Academy.
