Tips for Freshmen

  • Most importantly, relax. While applying to college is a long process and freshmen should not feel anxiety about it. There will be many steps along the way that will make this process less overwhelming.
  • The courses in most academic disciplines are taken in a particular sequential order. When choosing classes, freshmen should consider how each choice will affect their academic options as upperclassmen. Accordingly, freshmen should work with their mentors to choose courses that fit their larger academic goals.
  • Freshmen should explore the many clubs, organizations and sports available at Wayland Academy. College admission officers like to see continuity and commitment in regard to extracurricular activities. Freshmen year is a good time to experiment and try different activities.
  • Freshmen should focus on developing good study habits, such as time management, during their first year at Wayland. These skills are more difficult to develop later.
  • Volunteering answers and opinions in class will get students in the habit of thinking critically about their school work. Additionally, all students should be sure to go to their teachers for help when classes become difficult.
  • Students should read above and beyond what is assigned them in school. Regular readers generally do better on standardized tests and in classroom work.
  • Summers are a great time for students to explore their interests through travel, work, internships, volunteer experiences and camps.
