Welcome to Wayland!

Today, I welcome you to Wayland Academy’s virtual home with the same warmth, enthusiasm and excitement that has been extended to me during my first year here at the Academy.

While new to Wayland, I am not new to the college-preparatory boarding school world. I am a boarding school graduate and can personally attest to the benefits of attending a school such as Wayland Academy. The value of the Wayland experience – the academic rigor, the cultural diversity and the opportunity to grow while being supported by an inspiring, caring community of adults and peers is invaluable.

Wayland Academy is an exceptional institution. It is a traditional college-preparatory boarding school in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin (a small Midwestern town just 30 minutes northeast of Madison) with a richly diverse heritage dating back to the school’s founding in 1855. We offer tremendous depth and breadth in academics as we are one of the few remaining schools that continue to offer Latin, daily co-curricular activities, and a competitive sports program. We are also an intellectually curious community, continually embracing new teaching methods and innovative technology to help students meet the challenges of an exciting rapidly changing world.

Yet what makes Wayland most special is its warm and nurturing community. The Faculty, the Academy’s most valuable asset, are enthusiastic and passionate educators who live on campus and also serve as coaches and mentors to students. The Students are excited to be here and are motivated and eager to learn both inside and outside the classroom. The alumni, parents and friends are actively involved in the school and are committed to ensuring that Wayland thrives for another 150 years and beyond.

While our Web site provides you a representative taste of what your experience could be like at Wayland, there is no substitute for visiting campus, meeting our faculty and students, and learning first-hand what Wayland Academy has to offer: an incomparable preparation for college and your future.

Finally, I am reminded of a quote from a friend and mentor that applies directly to Wayland:

“A school like ours is not great because it is old;
it is old because it is great.”

So again, Welcome to Wayland and I hope that your visit here leads to an extraordinary future.

All the best,

Brian L. Cheek
